User Guide
Core tutorials for notes, drawing, sync, and AI on iPhone and iPad.
Notes
Create a Note
- Open beGin and go to the Note workspace.
- Tap New Note.
- Choose a note mode: Paged Note, Infinite Canvas, or Document.
- Select a paper style (Blank, Grid, Lined, or Dotted) if prompted.
- Optionally pick a template or subject preset.
- Your note opens and saves automatically as you work.
Choose a Note Mode
- Paged Note — multi-page handwriting, PDF annotation, images, text boxes, and Tape for hiding answers.
- Infinite Canvas — one scrollable surface for mind maps and mixed handwriting, text, and images.
- Document — keyboard writing with headings, lists, and formatting for essays and reports.
Converting between modes creates a new note and does not change the original.
Use Templates
- When creating a note, open the template picker or browse the Templates gallery from the library.
- Search or filter by category (e.g. Cornell Notes, Lab Report, Mathematics).
- Select a template — it is copied into your new note without modifying the original template.
- To save your own layout, use the option to create a custom template from an existing note.
Organize Notes
- From the Note library, use folders and tags to group related notes.
- Star or favorite important notes for quick access.
- Use search to find text across your library, including OCR-recognized handwriting.
- Deleted notes move to Trash and can be restored until permanently removed.
Use AI on a Note
- Open a note and open the AI Study Assistant, AI Tutor, or mode-specific AI panel.
- Choose an action such as Summarize Page, Explain Selection, Check My Answer, or Make Flashcards.
- Review the AI preview — nothing is inserted into your note until you confirm.
- To ask about a handwritten region, lasso the area and send it to AI (uses image/OCR credits).
- Results can be saved to Flashcards, Quiz, or Mistake Book where supported.
On-device handwriting OCR is free. Only server-side AI actions consume credits — see Understand AI Credits.
Export a Note
- Open the note you want to share or back up.
- Open the Export Center or share menu from the note options.
- Choose a format: beGin Note (.nexnote), PDF, or PNG (first page for paged notes).
- For Document notes, you can also export as .nexdoc or plain text (.txt).
- Save or share via the system share sheet. The original note is not modified.
Draw
Create an Artwork
- Open beGin on your iPhone or iPad.
- From the main gallery or home screen, tap the option to create a new artwork.
- Choose a canvas size or preset if prompted.
- Your new canvas opens and you can begin drawing immediately.
- Your artwork is saved automatically as you work.
Use Brushes
- Open an artwork on the canvas.
- Open the brush or tool panel from the toolbar.
- Select a brush type from the available options.
- Adjust brush size, opacity, or other settings if the panel provides them.
- Draw on the canvas with your finger or Apple Pencil.
Tip: Some brush settings may require a Pro or Pro+ subscription. Check the in-app subscription screen for details.
Manage Layers
- While editing an artwork, open the layers panel from the toolbar or side panel.
- Tap the add button to create a new layer.
- Tap a layer to select it — drawing applies to the selected layer.
- Use drag handles or layer controls to reorder layers.
- Toggle layer visibility or opacity using the controls shown for each layer.
- Delete a layer using the delete option on the selected layer.
Import and Export
- To import, open the import option from the gallery menu or artwork settings.
- Choose a compatible image file from Files or your photo library.
- The imported image is added as a new artwork or layer depending on the option you select.
- To export, open the artwork you want to share.
- Open the share or export menu from the toolbar or artwork options.
- Choose a format (such as PNG or JPEG) and save or share via the system share sheet.

Understand AI Credits
Each plan includes a monthly AI credit allowance:

Credits are consumed based on the action you use:
- Standard text question — 1 credit
- Image / OCR recognition — 3 credits
- Handwriting answer check — 3 credits
- Generate practice questions — 2 credits
- Regenerate answer — charged as a new request
- Check your remaining balance in the app — typically shown in the account or AI section.
- Credits are not currency and cannot be transferred or exchanged for cash.
- Unused credits generally do not roll over to the next billing period unless the app states otherwise.
